Did you ever wonder who puts on the Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day 5K Road Race? Obviously on race day there are dozens upon dozens of dedicated volunteers who give up their holiday; but during the rest of the year, it's a very small group. This core group of friends are known as the Crew, and 15 years ago they set out to create a special event to celebrate Commodore Isaac Hull and to spotlight the changes going on in the downtown areas of Shelton and Derby. By all accounts they have succeeded!
Since the race began in 2002 there has been rain, snow, fog, and even pre-race lightning. The event grew quickly from about 300 in 2002 to the current 750 and has sold out early for many years. With the final tally from the 2016 race, this very special Crew and their cherished event will have raised approximately $175,000 for the benefit of our Boys & Girls Club. Not bad for a group that made the enjoyment and safety of the runners the priority over fundraising.
The Crew retired after the 2016 race and has passed the baton to our Boys & Girls Club. Don't worry—we shadowed these pros last year, and some of the original crew have graciously agreed to stay on and help us for a smooth transition. We're excited to take the reins and will do our best to live up to the legacy the Crew has left us.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to the Crew—for your generosity of spirit, your unfailing enthusiasm for this special community event year after year, for the financial support the 5K has provided our youth, and most of all, thanks for the memories!
