RAYMOND P. LAVIETES UNIT HEALTHY LIFESTYLES
Our health and life skills programs help develop young people's capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well being, set personal goals, and live successfully as self-sufficient adults.
SMART Moves stands for Skill Mastery and Resistance Training. This prevention/education program addresses problems such as drug and alcohol use and peer pressure. The program uses a team approach involving Club staff, peer leaders, parents, and community representatives. More than simply emphasizing a "Say No" message, the program teaches young people ages 6-15 how to say no by involving the in discussion and role playing, practicing resistance and refusal skills, developing assertiveness, strengthening decision-making skills, and analyzing media and peer influence. The ultimate goal: to promote abstinence from substance abuse through the practice of responsible behavior.
Healthy Habits emphasizes good nutrition, regular physical activity, and improving overall well being. The program is geared to members ages 6-15 adn is the Mind component of Triple Play.
Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body, and Soul is sponsored by The Coca Cola Company and the Anthem Foundation. This dynamic wellness program demonstrates how eating right, keeping fit, and forming positive relationships add up to a healthy lifestyle. The goal is to improve Club members knowledge of healthy habits, increase the number of hours per day they participate in physical activities, and strengthen their ability to interact positively with others and engage in positive relationships. Because parents play such a critical role in the development of a child's physical and social well being, BGCA and Coca-Cola wanted to give them a tool that could be used at home, where healthy habits start, are modeled, and reinforced.
