JOEL E. SMILOW UNIT ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Academic Success is part of our Formula for Impact, and the aim of these programs is to ensure that all Club members graduate from high school on time, ready for a post-secondary education and a 21st-century career. Our Joel E. Smilow Clubhouse offers the following programs free with your child's after-school membership.

 

Immersion Science is a fun and powerful marine science education program for kids in grades 5-8. The program was founded by famed oceanographer Dr. Robert Ballard, the discoverer of the Titanic! What makes the program so successful is its joint emphais on scientific knowledge coupled with the fun and excitement of exploration. 

 

Power Hour: Making Minutes Count is a comprehensive homework help program designed to raise the academic proficiency of Club members. Our homework room is open Monday-Thursday and is staffed with a counselor to help any member needing assistance. We have special supplies for children needing materials for school projects as well. A permission slip is required for participation in Power Hour, which can be downloaded here or by clicking the image to the right. 

 

CareerLaunch: This fun and exciting program, sponsored by Bank of America and Gap Foundation, prepares teens for the world of careers and work. Through CareerLaunch, teens 13 to 18 years old embark on a journey to explore possible vocations, make sound eduational decisions, and find success in the world of work. 

 

Diplomas 2 Degrees: D2D is a college readiness program for members ages 13 to 18, which provides a range of services to help guide Club members through high school graduation and make plans for post-secondary education and career success.

 

Money Matters: Money Matters promotes financial responsibility and independence among Club members ages 13-18. Participants learn how to manage a checking account, create a budget, save and invest, start small businesses, and pay for college.  

 

My.Future Technology Programs: My.Future transforms the way young people use technology in clubs. Supported by Comcast, My.Future encourages youth to develop digital literacy and earn certifications, or digital badges, as they rpogress through the learning experience. The program currently includes the programs Robo Tech, Clay Tech, Game Tech, and the new Internet Essentials. Staff tailor their members' experiences by selecting from over 40 activities designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. 

 

Summer Brain Gain: Summer learning loss has a devastating effect of America's kids, especially those who don't participate in enriching summer activities. Summer Brain Gain is a fun, interactive learning program designed for summer in the Club!
